From 1 January 2016, the Ecodesign Directive specifies requirements for the output of air handling units. These requirements apply to all EU member states.
See the actual Directive here - where the requirements are described in detail.
NRVU and RVU units
The requirements are divided into two main categories - NRVU and RVU units. The abbreviation NRVU stands for Non-Residential Ventilation Unit, and RVU stands for Residential Ventilation Unit. Do not be confused by the use of the word "residential" in the definition. Only the airflow determines whether a unit is categorised as NRVU or RVU, not the area of use - see Table below.
Airflow:
Less than 250 m³/h
RVU*
Residential Ventilation Unit

|
Airflow:
Between 250 - 1000 m³/h
NRVU or RVU
The manufacturer decides whether the unit is to be characterised as NRVU or RVU

Airflow:
Greater than 1000 m³/h
NRVU*
Non-Residential Ventilation Unit
|
* regardless of the area of application (except in the case of process ventilation - see more on this under NRVU units).
